FIA Code Course

Course Overview

The course takes approximately 2 hours to complete, and enrolment includes access for 4 weeks from the time of purchase.

FIA members subscribe to a self-regulatory regime that raises the sector’s profile and enhances credibility and reputation with donors, government, and the community. Self-regulation is guided by the FIA Code, which was relaunched in 2017 and informed by the International Statement of Ethical Principles. All members must comply with the Code.

As charities’ reliance on fundraising grows, we need to ensure that the public trusts fundraisers to raise, manage, and distribute their generous gifts ethically and responsibly.

When you join FIA and complete the Code training, you are entitled to use the appropriate FIA Member logo, which signifies that you are committed to adhering to the Code and to ethical, best-practice professional fundraising.

The FIA Code course is designed to provide members (and others involved with fundraising) with a practical understanding of the Code and how to conduct fundraising in accordance with best practices. All FIA Members and anyone involved in fundraising, including staff, CEOs, board members, and volunteers, should complete the Code training.

An independent Code Authority oversees the Code's administration, which includes ongoing monitoring, complaints adjudication, and compliance training.

The Code covers:

  • transparent and ethical behaviour
  • conduct towards and communication with Donors
  • conduct towards and communication with Beneficiaries, including people in vulnerable circumstances
  • professional engagement with Suppliers

The course takes approximately 2 hours to complete and enrolment includes access for 4 weeks from the time of purchase.

Mid-Value Donors – the cream in the Oreo biscuit

Course Overview

This interactive workshop is a mix of information sharing and practical hands-on activities that takes participants through the fundamentals of a mid-value donor program.  It includes why we need to focus on mid-donors, industry benchmarks and the key steps to a successful program. It also features examples and case studies of programs where mid-value donors have been successfully leveraged via mid-value donor clubs, ‘loosely’ tied funds and matched asks.

More Strategic will share their research outcomes on what makes these donors different from standard donors and what motivates them.

By the end of this session, you will walk away with:

  • A clear understanding of the importance of mid-value donors within your fundraising portfolio
  • Practical steps for creating a successful mid-value program – including how to define, measure, and steward your mid-value donors
  • In-depth insight into how mid-value donors differ from other segments in term of who they are, what they care about and what they need
  • Inspiration from other organisations and the initiatives they are testing to great effect
  • A self-evaluation to help identify the key areas you need to focus on to enable strategic growth in this space

Digital Fundraising Essentials for Virtual Events

Course Overview

From exclusive gala balls to counting steps

Virtual events are one of the forces driving the democratisation of philanthropy, a movement to decolonise fundraising by breaking down traditional barriers and giving everyone a chance to contribute.

Data Privacy for Fundraisers

Course Overview

This 8-hour session is a comprehensive program designed to equip participants with a deep understanding of data privacy regulations and the processes and practices that help ensure compliance and reduce risk, covering key aspects of privacy, including the Privacy Act in Australia and the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) in the European Union. It also delves into data management processes and practices aimed at minimising privacy risks and ensuring compliance with data protection laws. By the end of this course, attendees will be well-prepared to navigate the complex landscape of data privacy, safeguard sensitive information, and adopt best practices for data management in an increasingly interconnected world.

Why is this important?

In 2023, the government responded to the review of the Privacy Act, flagging changes that would impact all organisations that collect, store, and use personal information. Driving the change is an overwhelming desire for individuals to have greater control over their information. In a recent survey 83% wanted more control and choice over how their personal information is collected and used. With recent high-profile data breaches in our sector, it has never been more important to understand the privacy regulations and how best to comply.

Who should attend this course?

Anyone who needs to understand the regulations governing the use of personal information and how to minimise the risk of a breach of those regulations, but who is not necessarily a data 'technician'.

  • Executive leaders who need to understand the potential risks
  • Data managers responsible for protecting personal information
  • Operations team using and managing personal information
  • IT teams responsible for preventing unwanted access to personal information

Course Structure

Session 1 – Understanding the regulations

  • Defining Personal & Sensitive Information
  • Privacy Act and the Australian Privacy Principles
  • General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
  • California Consumer Privacy Act
  • Notifiable Data Breach Scheme
  • Proposed changes to the Privacy Act

Session 2 – complying with regulation

  • Mapping flow of personal information
  • Data Governance & Classification
  • Privacy Impact Assessments
  • Simple approach to security
  • Privacy Policy & notifications
  • Staff Training
  • Privacy Data Management Framework

Donor Journey Mapping

Course Overview

Bringing together the principles of customer journeys, learn the theory behind donor journeys and how they can be used to drive great fundraising outcomes. You will create your own bespoke journey for your donors and participate in the hands-on construction of a donor journey, working in groups to create an assumptive donor journey map in class.

The course is designed to provide insights and value to beginners and more seasoned practitioners, starting with the basics of what customer journeys are and why we use them and then progressing rapidly to hands-on workshops where participants apply the knowledge immediately against scenarios. We regularly get more experienced marketers and even UX professionals on the course, and the feedback has been really positive from these people – whilst not all the material is new, there are generally a number of key insights they get through the course, and it helps validate their current knowledge and round out what is often on-the-job experience. The feedback on the course is very positive, no matter the starting skill level, indicating that it seems to provide value across the board. Where participants have already existing journeys, we often discuss those and provide insights on how those can be improved and evolved to the next level.

What you’ll learn

  • Why donor journeys have become so important
  • Why you need to develop them for your donors
  • How to run a customer journey for your donors
  • Techniques for understanding your donors and creating the journeys
  • How journeys can be used to determine marketing, digital and fundraising strategy

Who is this course for?

  • Fundraising and marketing managers
  • Fundraising event organisers
  • Gifts in Wills donor managers
  • Fundraisers responsible for donor engagement, retention and acquisition

What the course won't cover

  • Whilst the course will discuss the implementation of communications frameworks into marketing systems based on a detailed understanding of the donor journey, it does not explicitly go through the implementation of marketing automations and engagement sequences at granular level within a CRM given the wide variance of technology capabilities and platforms utilised by fundraisers

Learn how to prepare a 3-year plan to drive sustainable fundraising growth.

This practical, hands-on masterclass will equip you to create an effective fundraising strategy. Working through our 6-step process, we examine the fundraising market, your organisational culture, donor motivations, your fundraising portfolio, how to influence donor behaviour and the enablers of success. The session draws on analysis of the drivers of fundraising success from surveys with over 700 fundraisers, more than 25 years of developing strategies for 100 organisations and acclaimed sessions run at IFC in Asia and Europe.
